Masteroppgave i musikkpedagogikk Institutt for kunstfagen_US
Abstract The overall topic for this study is music in Norwegian folk high schools. Music is one of many academic options in a school that in 2020 achieved the highest score on well-being in an EPSI survey in which parents and students participated. The purpose of this study has been to provide a didactic analysis of how music has been taught in music at folk high schools, and how music teachers view their own practice. In addition, it has investigated how one can understand the teaching practice in light of bildung, through the researcher's perception of the research field and interviews with informants. The reason the folk high school has been chosen as a field of research comes from the school system's absence of curriculum, tests and exams in teaching. Compared to other school types such as primary and secondary school, it will be interesting to explore the teaching practice unaffected by these aforementioned formal assessments. The study's research design is a case study with a focus on four music teachers in teaching practice at one folk high school, and I have used observation and interviews as methods for collecting data. The field work was completed over a period of four weeks. Observation logging consists of transcribed field notes. The interviewer searches for the informants' subjective opinions and experiences of their own practice, which are expressed through six unstructured interviews. The interview was conducted right after teaching sessions, where the questions revolved around what I observed in the teaching. I have used observation and logging to gather the data material, which has also provided further insight and understanding of the research field. The empirical material is handled using selective and researcher-driven coding, as portrayed by Braun and Clarke. Through a thematic analysis, the data material is presented loosely based on Göran Folkestad's model for identifying formal and informal teaching, with the titles somewhat adjusted to better allign with the collected data material. The findings indicate that the practice is in a process-based teaching phase. The analysis shows that the teaching activity is first and foremost teacher-led, where the informants instruct the students to acquire certain skills. The informants nevertheless have a plan to regulate the degree of student participation and student co-determination, especially through the factors motivation, student premises and freedom.en_US
