’Ein farfar i livet’ En karakteranalyse av besteforeldrekarakteren i tre bøker for barn og unge

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvilke kjennetegn og funksjoner litterære besteforeldrekarakterer blir gitt i et utvalg nyere norsk barne- og ungdomslitteratur. Besteforeldre og eldre mennesker er karakterer som ofte opptrer i bøker for barn og unge, og det er derfor viktig å skape en bevissthet rundt hvordan de blir portrettert i slike narrativ. Dette kan blant annet fortelle oss noe om hvilket syn vi har på alderdom og på relasjonen mellom ung og gammel. Prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i tre bøker for barn og unge: Heilt passeleg vill (2005) av Bente Bratlund, Den onde arven (2014) av Thomas Enger og Vaffelhjarte (2012) av Maria Parr. I disse bøkene finner vi besteforeldrekarakterer som er sentrale i handlingen og som opptrer som støttespillere for barneprotagonistene, selv om bøkene varierer i sjanger og form. Karakterene er analysert med bruk av teori om karakterisering av litterære karakterer og narrativ teori som verktøy. Funn i nærlesingene viser at det er store forskjeller i fremstillingen av besteforeldrekarakterene, noe som kan begrunnes i bøkenes varierte sjangre og form. På tross av dette viser funnene også til en innebygd oppfatning av eldre mennesker som gode og viktige støttespillere for barn og unge. Selv om besteforeldrekarakterenes funksjoner kommer til uttrykk på ulike måter, viser alle funksjonene at besteforeldrene er opptatt av barnas ve og vel og at besteforeldrenes atferd og handlinger springer ut i fra en stor kjærlighet og omsorg for barna. I tillegg er det interessant at tematikk som døden er noe som blir tatt opp i alle bøkene og at spor av stereotypier knyttet til både alder og kjønn fortsatt er å finne i portretteringen av eldre i alle bøkene.

This master thesis examines the different characteristics and functions of the literary grandparent-character in a selection of newer Norwegian literature for children and young adults. Because we see that grandparents and older people often appear in books for children and YA, it is important to establish a consciousness about what characteristics and functions older characters are given in these narratives. This might tell us something about how we view old age or wish old age should be viewed, and how we think or hope the relationship between young and old should be. This thesis is centered around close readings of three newer Norwegian books for children and YA: Heilt passeleg vill (2005) by Bente Bratlund, Den onde arven (2014) by Thomas Enger and Vaffelhjarte (2012) by Maria Parr. In these books, we find central grandparentcharacters who act as important supporters for the protagonists, despite of the differences and variations in the books’ genres and patterns. The theory which the analysis is based on is theory about characterization of literary characters, especially in children’s fiction, and narrative theory. The findings in the close readings show us that there is a big difference in how the grandparent-characters are portrayed, which we can explain by the varied use of genres and patterns in the narratives. Despite this fact, the findings suggest that it exists a built-in view that portrays the grandparents as important supporters of younger people. Even though the functions and characteristics are portrayed in different ways, they all demonstrate that grandparents are busy taking care of the children’s welfare, and that the grandparents’ behaviors and actions come from a place of big compassion and care for the children. It is also interesting that themes about death is something that all the books are concerned with, and that we still find traces of stereotyping related to both age and gender in the portraying of the grandparents in the material.
