Abstract
The analytical concepts sex and gender are based on western ‘folk’ notions which have plural meanings that are partly internally inconsistent. This article argues that sex and gender thus are epiphenomena or ‘emergent phenomena’ and should be described as such. In order to understand the processes whereby these phenomena are generated we need to use concepts other than gender and sex. I claim that risk and trust are two basically different kinds of inter-subjective logics, and that the logic of risk to a large extent is congruent with the categories ‘men’ and masculinity, whereas the logic of trust to a large extent is congruent with the categories ‘women’ and ‘feminine’.
