Sammendrag
Nurse students on journeys;
Student exchange in nurse education; collaboration, innovative processes and development of cultural competence.
Over the last six years, international student exchange in nurse education at Stord/Haugesund has had a substantial growth in both incoming and outbound students. This report describes some of the experiences, challenges and reflections we have made in the process.
When a curriculum based, traditional nurse education encounters strong political demands to facilitate international student exchange; it implies need for changes. Such processes require willingness for innovation and flexibility by the department, asking which barriers are self-imposed and which are national or European regulations for nurse education not possible to alter. A health promotive perspective on education with a focus on resources and opportunities rather than limitations and rigid frames, is a natural consequence for internationalisation in higher education.
Central prerequisites are interdepartmental collaboration, student-oriented learning, and continuous development of both cultural competence and English proficiency at all levels of the University College. This report confirms earlier work showing the value a study abroad period has for students. The enhancing and challenging “disturbances” involved, signify need to provide on-going support and professional development in nurse education
