Redusere bruk av tvang i demensomsorgen
Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of different education interventions in reducing the use of coercion in care home residents with dementia.Method: This is a literature review that addresses five randomized controlled trials and one mixed method study. Results: The result show a positive change in the use of coercion in all the studies, whether compared to the control group or baseline. This indicates that the education interventions led to a reduction in use of coercion. In one research article the positive effect on use of coercion was no longer maintained when followed up at twelve months. The education interventions proved to have a positive effect on staff knowledge and attitudes. In one research article this positive effect was no longer maintained when followed up at six months, which may be due to lack of ongoing support, time and planning. The staff’s awareness changed, and the staff became better at using alternative strategies and gave well-founded arguments for and against the use of coercion in each individual situation. There were no significant change in aggression or drug use. Conclusion: The education interventions proved to have a positive effect on the use of coercion, staff knowledge and attitudes.
