Abstract

This assignment is a literature study about unaccompanied minor refugees. This work is about social workers (and other caretakers) increasing the inclusion and strengthening the accompanied minor’s resilience. It is because of my own experience working with accompanied minors that I chose this assignment subject. I have experienced the difficulties some minors have with inclusion. Research shows that when a caretaker first meets a young refugee, the caretaker is not always friendly or emotionally present. One good starting point is for the caretaker to see the minor as resourceful and not treat them as victim. It is important that we caretakers welcome the minors to Norway in a positive way, so they can have a good quality of life in their new environment. The literature study highlights various welfare areas that social workers and caretakers must work towards for promote resilience and inclusion, such as a school, workplace, home, social or recreational activity. To be able to work in these areas, it is necessary to help them to mobilizing resources, providing a good relationship and development support, and being culture sensitive when working with minors.

In addition, I have found three different scientific research articles that shed light on the minor refugee’s experience, working with caretakers on various locations. It also brought forward the various challengers that environmental workers meet working with minor refugees in their home. Here, there are challenges related to experiencing it as a home for some of the minors. I will discuss this in my discussion by looking at various welfare areas to emphasize social welfare work, inclusion and resilience.
