Abstract

Opioid Maintenance Treatment (OMT) has in the latest years become the most dominated treatment form for people suffering form opioid dependency in the world. A pregnancy in OMT is considered a high-risk pregnancy because of the medication the fetus is exposed to. Between 60-80% of children born in OMT in Norway is born with a withdrawal because of the medication. In this paper the goal is to find out what consequences OMT has on children, and what kind of follow-up the family needs.

The method I used to find an answer was literature study, where I use other people’s research to find the answer to my goal.

The result form my research is that when it comes to the research on OMT and children, people are disagreeing. Some people writes that there are no consequences for children who are born to mother´s in OMT, while some people writes the opposite. When it comes to what the family need it is important to observe the interaction between child and parents, because this interaction is important for the child’s development and attachment to the parents.

The conclusion of this paper is that it hard to know about the consequences for a child born from at mother in OMT. This is because there are many factors to think about. When it comes to the families need of follow-up, this will depend on the family situation.
