Abstract

When a child experiences domestic violence, it will be characterized for life. The topic of this study is children who witness domestic violence. The aim of the assignment had been to gain more knowledge of the topic, and my topic question therefore reads as follow: «What are the consequences for a child that experience domestic violence? »

To answer the topic question, I have in this literature study used different theories in relation to the research articles I have used. I have considered Per Isdal`s definition of the concept of violence, and I have examined the different types of violence in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma, attachment disorders and resilience. I discuss the different consequences a child may get of experiencing domestic violence, where the main finding was that the children are at high risk of developing a variety of health problems, including emotional- and behavioral disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma and association disorders. The results, however, are daunting because it adds uncertainty about selection, methodology and measurement criteria in the various studies.
