The thesis reveals the relationship between spatial conditions and where retail stores located themselves in Bergen municipality. The path between location theory and spatial conditions is described in the thesis, and an attempt has been made to present their bilateral influence on each other. This is the general thematic approach to the thesis. There have been many location theorists throughout the years, and some key theories have been described to answer the research question. Spatial conditions have been recorded through the Geographic Information System (GIS), and Space Syntax analyzes that did not exist when Bill Hillier et al. first described the relationship between location of economic activities, social behavior and spatial configuration in the 1990s. Furthermore, the analysis methods Space Matrix and MXI have been used, and a registration of the number of residents within a 500-meter radius of the stores. The research question is: How does the built environment effect the location of retail in Bergen municipality? Three types of location strategies have been found for locating stores in the urban system. It is the transport-oriented retail, the population-oriented retail, and the combination of them. The findings are not exclusively exhaustive. This is only a step on the way forward for a understanding of the connection between land use, land economy and social behavior based on the retail market. There is a need for further analysis and supplementation of several analysis methods, and the use of case studies to study the phenomena in more detail. One can further study a smaller municipality than Bergen, for a more fine-grained analysis, than the generalizations that have been made in this thesis.en_US
