Abstract

In this task we have researched what the crew on board a Ro-Ro passenger ship in international waters, mean about the emergency readiness on board. Our research question was «what does the crew on a Ro-Ro passenger ship mean are the biggest weaknesses with the emergency readiness routines on board? And how prepared does the crew think they are in an emergency situation?» We chose a qualitative method in which interviews and observations were made. In all we performed seven qualitative interviews of the crew, in addition to participating observation. The conclusion in this task reflects the weaknesses with the emergency readiness routines on board. It appears in the survey that the crew experience the readiness as good, even though the exercises isn’t too realistic, and there is a lack of exercises except for fire- and lifeboat drills on board. The results also show that the ship requires assistance from outside agencies and that some conditions can make this assistance difficult in emergency situations.
