Child poverty has been a growing issue in Norway for the last ten to fifteen years, and is often addressed as a problem that interferes with the idea of equality of opportunity for all children. In today’s knowledge based society education is emphasized as the most important factor securing self-sufficiency and preventing social exclusion in Norway. Therefore school can be seen as the most important institution for equalizing the future effects of differences in children´s social background. In my study I ask what importance growing up in low-income families or parents socioeconomic status has for school achievements in Norway. I used literature study as my method, and has focused on quantitative research that show the statistical relationship between low-income families, socioeconomic status and children´s school results. My main discoveries show that parental income on its own almost is of no importance, while parents education and accumulation of problems in the family is of most importance for children’s school results.en_US
