Abstract

This literature review examines the relationship between challenging behavior among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and communicative impairments. Communicative impairments in ASD are related to difficulties and characterized by poor expressive language and lack of communication initiation. Children with ASD frequently experience a range of other emotional and behavioral problems that are generally referred to as “challenging behavior”. The findings showed that these factors can make daily living particularly difficult, especially for child that experience the inability to satisfy their needs through effective communication. There are variations in interventions focusing on communication or relation. These are: Functional analysis (FA), alternative and supplementary communication, adapting/ coping skills, therapist training and adaptations to an intervention, and recognizing otherness. This literature review concluded that futher research are needed to get better understanding of challenging behavior among children with ASD and communicative impairments.
