Abstract
Algorithms are today a digital tool, which gives the internet a different setting to how and why users, the technology within and different stakeholders choose to interact and communicate. This master's thesis places the algorithms in the middle of the digital communication and seek to understand and explain why algorithms have a crucial function in how different ways to communicate are located, related and managed in relation to social and cultural imitations and functions. In relation to algorithms – as a necessary function in how the digital communication can be describes, analysed and understood, the approach will be through social and cultural theories and ways of being. In describing the digital communication as an extension of how algorithms gives the communication the basic necessaries in order to expand into different forms and ways to communicate. The approach in which way the master's thesis will understand and explain its topic, will be through a comparison of several perspectives and frameworks on algorithms relation in a digital context.
The thesis conclude that even through this comparison of algorithms as digital tools for social and cultural factors in the digital communication – the algorithms is still complex and contains of several contexts which have not been given much attention. Because of this, together with an ongoing need for better understanding for the algorithmic process and work in the digital area, the value of the thesis is not to give an answer for exactly how the algorithms gives the digital communication the basic information and "playground". Rather, the value of the master's thesis is give a better understanding of algorithms complexities and the need to seek complex understanding of the digital communication. Further, hopefully to set ideas on how to view algorithms.
